Google has made it easy for parents to control their children’s Android devices with the Family Link app. As Google explains, “every family feels differently about what their kids should and shouldn’t be able to do on their device,” so the Family Link app can accommodate every parent’s choice on how to control their own children’s use of Android devices. For example, do you want to limit your child’s device time so that it shuts down at 10 PM and won’t wake up till 7 am?  Family Link has you covered. You want to monitor your child’s use of the device knowing what apps your child is accessing and for how long your child is using a particular app. Easy. The Family Link app also lets you approve any app your child wants to download.

It is simple to set up. You download the app on your Android device (requires Android Nougat 7.0 or higher). Your child will need a new device that runs Android Nougat (7.0)* or higher as well. You set up a Google account for your child. Then sign your child into the new device. Your Android device using the Family Link app controls all the devices you set up in this manner. You can monitor all your children’s device usage and control their usage. You can remotely lock your kid’s device when it’s time to play, study, or sleep.

Google is inviting parents now to have early access to the Family Link program by invitation only and you can sign up now.

Google has a guide for families on how to use this app with some helpful tips which is approved by the Family Online Safety Institute. You really should read these helpful tips such as creating strong passwords, using content filters, balancing your child’s use of screen time, keeping private info private, and exploring together what your child’s favorite apps are. For example, how can you find family-friendly content in Google Play? Google provides star badges that tells you what age group the developer designed for their app or game for, and if the app or movie is Family-friendly (Mixed audience of kids and adults} and what the app or movie is age specific for (ranges between 0 and 12 years old) or whether Parental Guidance is suggested on any apps not designed solely for children. The Family Link Disclosure for Parents is also a good read.

You can download the Family Link app on the Google Play Store.
